I have to say, I totally agree with Ronen here. The point of Tumblr specifically (and having your own blog in general) is that you post what YOU want to post. There really is no “right” or “wrong” way to do it.
I like Tumblr because it makes me less OCD about my posts. The platform fosters stream of consciousness sharing, with all the good, bad (and yeah, a bit of the crazy) that brings. When I used Movable Type, I almost never posted more than once a day, mostly because I felt the need to make everything into perfectly packaged mini-essays, complete with photos and captions and tons of links, and that’s time-consuming as all hell.
Now I feel comfortable just posting a thought, or a fragment of a conversation I overhear. I think of it as part scrapbook, part journal, part therapist, part focus group for my column. It works well for me, and most importantly, I enjoy it.
I won’t change my blogging style just because someone thinks I pop up in their RSS feed too often. This is exactly why I don’t follow anyone and I don’t have an RSS feed … I like to see blogs in context. That’s just my preference. It’s okay if it’s not yours. And I think it’s cool if, on your blog, you choose to post more lengthy entries, less frequently. That’s the best part of this particular medium … it’s really whatever you want it to be.
Kumbaya, bitches!
Wow. No follows and NO RSS! Either you don’t visit too many sites or have an extensive bookmark collection. I LOVE Google Reader. I subscribe to about 175 blogs, vlogs, shows, and sites and Reader allows me to quickly go through posts. Of course a lot of videos have to be viewed from the site, but I tend to go to the original sites often to leave comments on videos and blog posts.
I do see your point though. It’s your blog, post what you want as often as you want. If it becomes too much for people they can choose how to take it in. I have similar issues with Twitter. I tend to update too much at times and have had people stop following me because I updated more than their friends. Oh well.
Great post.
